Querétaro deputy Claudia Díaz Gayou proposes five electoral reform initiatives

Deputy Claudia Díaz Gayou of the Partido del Trabajo presented a package of five initiatives to amend Querétaro’s Electoral Law and the Law on Media Appeals before a July 17 deadline, aiming to shape the 2027 state election.

The proposals seek to strengthen gender parity by requiring parties to nominate women candidates in at least three of the five most populous municipalities (Querétaro, San Juan del Río, El Marqués, Corregidora and Pedro Escobedo). They would also make serious foreign interference – such as external financing, media campaigns, cyber‑attacks, disinformation or political pressure – a ground for nullifying an election.

Additional measures include assigning proportional‑representation seats to the “best‑loser” candidates with a guarantee for at least one seat for candidates under 30, revising municipal council composition to reflect vote shares and curb over‑representation, and aligning local rules with federal reforms on nepotism and the ban on consecutive re‑election (the ban to take effect in 2030). The deputy presented the package alongside Morena state leader Gisela Sánchez Díaz de León, noting that the reforms must be discussed and approved before July 17 to be applicable to the 2027 electoral process.
