Mexico's SEP analyzes cell phone and digital platform regulation in schools

Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) is analyzing measures to regulate the use of cell phones and digital platforms in schools. The initiative aims to foster digital citizenship and protect students from risks such as cyberbullying, sexual harassment, and exposure to violent or unsolicited content.

During a forum at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, SEP Secretary Mario Delgado stated that the goal is not to impose restrictions but to establish limits and raise awareness. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that artificial intelligence does not replace critical thinking and that technology serves as a tool for teaching rather than a distraction.

Educational authorities in regions like Sinaloa have expressed support for such regulations, noting that uncontrolled device use can act as a significant distractor in the classroom. The debate involves balancing the educational benefits of digital tools with the need to protect the mental and physical well-being of children and adolescents.
