Querétaro updates school protocols for cell phone use and security

The Querétaro Secretary of Education, Martha Elena Soto Obregón, announced plans to adjust the protocols of the ‘Ley Kuri’ to align with a forthcoming federal proposal regarding cell phone restrictions in schools. While the state has seen improvements in student interaction and reduced classroom interruptions according to a study supported by the University of Washington, inconsistencies in how different institutions enforce the rules have led to the need for clearer guidelines for teachers and administrators.

In addition to digital device management, authorities are reviewing school security measures following an incident where a firearm was brought into a middle school in Jalpan de Serra. Soto Obregón is evaluating whether metal detector arches are sufficient or if additional integrated security strategies are required. The review will consider the specific characteristics and student populations of individual schools to develop a comprehensive approach involving families and specialists.
