Quilicura toxic smoke threat raises health concerns in Chile

Fires at a chemical‑handling company in the Quilicura commune of Santiago have produced a toxic smoke plume containing fine PM2.5 particles, carbon monoxide and other irritant compounds. Health officials warn that prolonged exposure can irritate eyes, throat and lungs, aggravate chronic conditions such as asthma and COPD, and increase the risk of respiratory crises, especially among children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with pre‑existing illnesses.

Authorities advise residents to stay indoors, seal windows and vents, avoid outdoor physical activity, stay hydrated and use certified N95 or FFP2 masks if exposure is unavoidable. The fire brigade may issue evacuation orders for those in close proximity to the blaze. Prompt medical consultation is recommended for persistent or severe symptoms.
