South American fire smoke health alerts

In early August 2026 a forest fire erupted in the La Victoria sector of El Quinche near Quito, Ecuador. Strong winds and dry vegetation hampered ground firefighting, prompting municipal authorities to deploy aerial support and keep the fire department on scene. Mayor Pabel Muñoz ordered orange and red health alerts for downwind neighborhoods, urging residents—especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions—to stay indoors, seal windows, wear masks and avoid open‑air fires.

A few days later, on 5 August, a fire at a chemical‑handling facility in Quilicura, a commune of Santiago, Chile generated a toxic plume rich in fine PM2.5 particles, carbon monoxide and irritant compounds. Health officials warned of eye, throat and lung irritation and heightened risk for asthma, COPD and other chronic conditions. They advised the public to remain indoors, seal vents, limit outdoor activity and use certified N95/FFP2 masks, with evacuation orders possible for those in immediate proximity.

Both incidents highlight the growing challenge of fire‑related air‑quality crises in South America, prompting coordinated emergency responses and public‑health advisories to protect vulnerable populations from hazardous smoke exposure.
