Quinbrook proposes 520 MW battery at historic Uriarra Station near Canberra

Quinbrook Infrastructure and its partner Private Equity Partners have applied to build the FlatRock Energy Storage project, a 520‑megawatt battery system on Uriarra Station, a 1,200‑hectare historic sheep and cattle farm about 30 km north‑west of Canberra, ACT. The proposal, filed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, would use roughly 10 % of the property, leaving the land available for grazing and planting young trees along the project border. The installation would include a battery storage facility, overhead transmission line, two substations, a water crossing and internal roads, and is designed to operate continuously for up to 50 years before removal and site rehabilitation.

The battery is expected to provide at least four hours of storage, equivalent to about 2,100 MWh, making it one of the largest battery projects in Australia. Environmental impact is projected to be limited to non‑native grassland, with potential disturbance to the foraging habitat of threatened species such as the Gang‑gang cockatoo and the Superb parrot. Uriarra Station is notable for having hosted former U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1953.
