In Cancún, the Sargazo Circular Forum highlighted how the macroalga that clogs Caribbean beaches is being turned into commercial products. Companies and researchers displayed sargazo‑based shoes, textiles, high‑strength construction blocks and organic bio‑fertilizers, presenting the material as a new raw‑material stream that could generate local jobs. Participants said the main hurdles are scaling production, investment and establishing legal and logistical frameworks for large‑scale collection and processing.

At the same time, a series of power outages across Quintana Roo has intensified calls for a shift to renewable energy. Officials noted that the Federal Electricity Commission’s grid is under severe strain from rapid tourism‑driven growth and reliance on fossil‑fuel generation. Stakeholders urged reforms to attract private investment in distributed solar generation and to create incentives for photovoltaic installations, arguing that solar power could make the region’s electricity supply more resilient and reduce carbon emissions.
