Quintana Roo business leaders propose measures to boost local tourism
Business leaders in Quintana Roo are proposing various strategies to bolster the local economy amidst moderate hotel occupancy rates. Offner Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa del Carmen, suggested promoting domestic tourism among state residents to sustain activity during periods of low international arrivals. This initiative aims to encourage residents of municipalities like Playa del Carmen, Cancún, and Tulum to visit other regional destinations, fostering a circular economy.
Recent data shows average hotel occupancy in the region reached 48.5 percent between September 19 and 25. Cozumel reported the highest occupancy at 55.1 percent, followed by Isla Mujeres and Cancún. Other areas, including the Riviera Maya and Tulum, recorded lower rates.
In Cancún, the restaurant sector is also seeking economic reactivation through extended operating hours. While the city council has approved extended hours for the Hotel Zone, Perla Flores Navarro, president of Canirac Cancún, stated that the industry is now lobbying for similar extensions for businesses located in the city center to maximize nighttime economic activity.
