Quintana Roo officials and federal government strengthen sargassum response

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and federal authorities have agreed to enhance the National Strategy for Sargassum Management in Quintana Roo. Key measures include the development of an early warning system through the Environmental Monitoring Center to anticipate seaweed arrivals, the installation of additional coastal barriers, and the deployment of more sargassum-collecting vessels.

The strategy also focuses on improving the transport of seaweed to final disposal sites and exploring methods for its valorization and use. To ensure continuous oversight, two new working groups will be formed to coordinate actions between the state and municipal cabinets.

This coordination comes as Quintana Roo faces record levels of sargassum, with over 153,000 tons collected in 2026, a 59.3 percent increase from the previous year. The federal government has allocated significant resources toward this issue, with the 2027 budget proposal earmarking approximately 1.87 billion pesos for the Secretariat of the Navy to address the phenomenon in the state.
