Quintana Roo faces mosquito surge and influenza rise
Quintana Roo is facing dual public health challenges involving mosquito proliferation and a rise in respiratory illnesses. An increase in mosquito populations is affecting major tourist destinations, including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, and Mahahual. Residents and visitors report that excessive insect presence in beaches, cenotes, and residential areas is hindering outdoor activities. This surge is linked to recent rains and standing water, raising concerns over the transmission of diseases such as dengue. As of October 9, the state had recorded 361 confirmed dengue cases.
Simultaneously, health authorities are monitoring an influenza outbreak. By epidemiological week 39 of 2026, the state reported 77 confirmed influenza cases and three deaths. In Cancún, respiratory illnesses have accounted for approximately 20% of municipal medical consultations, exceeding the typical range of 10% to 15%. In response, a winter vaccination campaign for influenza, Covid-19, and pneumococcus has been launched, targeting high-risk groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
