Quintana Roo sargassum levels hit record high amid tourism impact

Sargassum accumulation in Quintana Roo has reached record levels, with the Mexican Navy reporting that over 123,400 tons have been collected so far this year, a 33 percent increase compared to the previous year. To combat the influx, the state is implementing a strategy involving specialized vessels, containment barriers, and significant financial investment.

Despite these efforts, the presence of the macroalgae is impacting the regional economy. Tourism officials attribute a drop in summer hotel occupancy—which averaged 56 percent—partly to the sargassum presence, alongside increased competition from digital rental platforms and a reduction in available flights.

Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the management of the seaweed. While the state government highlights its science-based infrastructure and coordination with the Navy, inhabitants report that improper disposal and the use of heavy machinery are causing coastal erosion, unpleasant odors, and pest issues in various localities.
