Quintana Roo officials coordinate sargassum management and budget oversight

Authorities in Quintana Roo are coordinating efforts to manage sargassum influxes to protect the state's coastline, tourism industry, and natural environment. Governor Mara Lezama reported ongoing coordination with President Claudia Sheinbaum to maintain a joint strategy between the state and federal governments to address the phenomenon.

Local legislator Euterpe Gutiérrez Valasis emphasized that the Quintana Roo Congress will monitor the distribution of sargassum mitigation funds during the 2027 budget discussions. The goal is to ensure that resources are not concentrated solely in northern tourist destinations but are also allocated to the southern coast, specifically mentioning the need for attention in Mahahual and Xcalak.

Currently, two billion pesos have been authorized by the Federal Government to address sargassum along the Caribbean coast. Legislators intend to oversee these investments to ensure comprehensive coverage across the entire state coastline.
