Mexico tourism shows growth in Yucatán and Quintana Roo

Tourism sectors in southeastern Mexico are reporting varied trends. In Quintana Roo, authorities are implementing a strategy for the second half of the year focused on air connectivity, cultural events, and sargassum management. The state maintains over 540 daily flights and is seeing a gradual recovery in hotel occupancy in areas like Holbox and Isla Mujeres. Additionally, the State Tourism Secretariat (SEDETUR) has launched the 2026 State Tourism Award to recognize contributions to sustainability and economic development.

In Yucatán, cruise tourism is experiencing significant growth. During the first half of 2026, the state recorded 96 cruise ship arrivals, a 14.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Passenger numbers rose by 21.8%, with over 294,000 visitors. Projections suggest Yucatán could reach 171 arrivals and over 521,000 passengers by the end of the year, bolstered by the modernization of the Port of Progreso.

Meanwhile, archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá are seeing a summer surge, with approximately 67,000 visitors recorded in early August. Efforts are also underway to reopen local attractions, such as the Balamcanché and Lol-Tún caves, following maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
