Since June 2026, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has pushed a diversification agenda for Quintana Roo. A meeting with Spanish-owned hotel chains promoted the “Caribe Mexicano” campaign, reinforced air-connectivity goals and noted 20.2 million tourists in 2025. The $15 Visitax tourism levy will be embedded in airline tickets by 2027 to raise compliance. July’s “Gran Escapada 2026” generated 2.75 billion pesos in spill-over, launched a “Puenteando con Sabor” gastronomy pavilion, inaugurated Chetumal’s first World-Athletics-certified track and opened the 350-million-peso Hospital Joya Tulum for medical tourism. Private investment continued on the Cancún Malecón Tajamar revamp and a circular-economy pact to mitigate sargassum. The federal “Plan Tulum Renace” cut entry fees to the Parque del Jaguar and Tulum archaeological zone, kept beach access free and promised cheaper transport and promotion. In August 2026, Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora toured Parque del Jaguar to review progress on the “Plan Tulum Renace,” emphasizing inter-institutional coordination with INAH and CONANP. Measures include free entry for Mexican visitors, an 80-peso fee for nationals (free on Sundays), and a 265-peso charge for foreigners. To combat a summer downturn where coastal hotel occupancy dropped to 15 percent, the municipal tourism office is promoting inland destinations like Cobá and various cenotes.
