CFE announces major electrical infrastructure investments in Mexico

The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has announced significant infrastructure investment plans to modernize Mexico’s electrical grid and meet rising demand. The utility presented an investment program of approximately $37.5 billion USD through 2030, targeting generation, transmission, distribution, and storage. This expansion aims to support industrial growth driven by nearshoring, electromobility, and the increasing energy needs of data centers and artificial intelligence applications.

In Quintana Roo, the CFE is moving forward with the Playacar–Chankanaab II project, a 3.563 billion peso investment to strengthen the electrical supply in Cozumel. Announced by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, the project involves a submarine alternating current line, four substations, and new transmission and distribution lines to improve service reliability for residents and the tourism sector.

In Nuevo León, the CFE has reiterated a commitment to invest 8.9 billion pesos by 2030 to address frequent power outages and grid deterioration in the Monterrey metropolitan area. This includes 2.165 billion pesos for distribution works, such as new substations and network modernization, and 6.719 billion pesos for transmission projects.
