Quintana Roo tourism faces economic shifts and fraud alerts

The tourism sector in Quintana Roo is navigating a challenging low season marked by economic shifts and security concerns. In Cancún, authorities have approved extended closing hours for bars and nightclubs in the Hotel Zone to stimulate consumption and support the industry. However, this move has sparked debate regarding potential security risks during late-night hours and competitive disadvantages for businesses located in urban centers.

The economic strain is evident in neighboring areas; Playa del Carmen has seen between 10 and 15 permanent restaurant closures, while businesses in Tulum are operating at their limits due to high rents and decreased tourist spending.

Additionally, the romance tourism industry in the Mexican Caribbean is facing a new threat. The Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal has issued an alert regarding fraudulent priests who pose as Catholic clergy to officiate wedding ceremonies within hotel complexes. Bishop Salvador González Morales warned that these unauthorized ceremonies could leave couples without valid sacraments, urging hotels and wedding planners to strictly verify religious credentials.
