Quito identifies 321 neighborhoods at risk of flooding and landslides

The Municipality of Quito has identified 321 neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding and landslides, affecting approximately 969,008 residents across 35 parishes in the Metropolitan District. According to municipal diagnostics, 210 neighborhoods face very high exposure, while 27 others are classified as high risk. These threats are often concentrated near ravines, slopes, or unstable terrain.

Recent heavy rains in October have already caused significant damage, including flooding in Carapungo, a collapsed wall in Carcelén, and a sinkhole on Eloy Alfaro Avenue. In the El Madrigal sector, mitigation works have been completed following an October 11 landslide caused by a private pipe failure. Authorities utilized corrugated pipes, PVC, and geomembranes to stabilize the area.

To address these vulnerabilities, the Municipality has announced $55 million for emergency prevention and drainage infrastructure projects, including collectors on De los Granados and Eloy Alfaro avenues.
