Quito enforces pico y placa vehicle restrictions on June 16‑17
The Quito municipality keeps its pico y placa traffic‑restriction scheme in force on weekdays. On Tuesday 16 June 2026 drivers of vehicles whose license plates end in 3 or 4 are prohibited from circulating between 06:00‑09:30 and 16:00‑20:00, while on Wednesday 17 June 2026 the restriction applies to plates ending in 5 and 6. The rule covers private cars and motorcycles within the city’s defined urban perimeter; weekends and public holidays are exempt.
Violations incur progressive fines calculated from the 2026 Unified Basic Salary (SBU) of $482: the first offense costs $72.30 (15 % of SBU), the second $144.60 (30 %), and the third $241.00 (50 %). The municipality warns that compliance helps reduce congestion, improve safety and shorten travel times.
