Quảng Trị implements landmine clearance and soldier recovery efforts

In Quảng Trị, Vietnam, ongoing efforts to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance are transforming former “death zones” into productive agricultural and residential areas. Decades after the war, regions once feared as dangerous territories are seeing the development of rubber forests, farms, and new housing. Organizations such as the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and the Renew project have played critical roles in cleaning the soil and making the land safe for livelihoods.

Parallel to land clearance, a major campaign is underway to locate and identify the remains of soldiers lost during the conflict. Between March 2026 and July 2027, a “500-day campaign” has been launched to accelerate the search and repatriation of fallen soldiers. This effort is described as a race against time, as eyewitnesses diminish and the physical traces of the war fade. The Thạch Hãn River remains a significant site of memory, where many soldiers were lost during the intense battles of 1972.
