Vietnam post-war mine clearance and recovery efforts
Overview
Vietnam is utilizing various methods to address the legacy of wartime explosives and recover fallen soldiers. In Quang Ngai province, a pilot study has demonstrated the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to create priority maps for clearing bombs, landmines, and unexploded ordnance (UXO). This data-driven approach integrates wartime bombing data, field surveys, and socio-economic factors to optimize the use of limited resources.
In Quang Tri, landmine and UXO clearance efforts are converting former “death zones” into residential areas, farms, and rubber forests. Alongside these clearance activities, a “500-day campaign” is being conducted to locate and identify the remains of soldiers lost during the conflict, particularly in areas like the Thach Han River.
