Racing Victoria clears jockeys in fatal Caulfield Cup inquiry

Racing Victoria has concluded its inquiry into the fatal incident during the Caulfield Cup involving the horses Ohope Wins and Half Yours. Stewards determined that the event was a tragic racing incident and could not attribute the accident to the careless actions of any specific rider.

The inquiry found that near the 300-metre mark, Kings Valley shifted out marginally while Green Spaces shifted in under pressure, causing the horses to make contact. This chain reaction caused Green Spaces to become unbalanced, which subsequently tightened the running of Half Yours, leading to its fall. Ohope Wins was then unable to avoid the fallen Half Yours and sustained fatal injuries.

While Ohope Wins could not be saved, Half Yours is recovering from lacerations and abrasions but will be spelled for the remainder of the Spring Carnival. Jockeys Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil were treated for minor injuries; McNeil has been cleared to return to racing, while Zahra is undergoing further medical assessment.
