Fatal Caulfield Cup racing incident
Overview
During the 2026 Caulfield Cup, a mid-race fall occurred approximately 300 meters from the finish line when the horse Half Yours clipped heels and went down. This caused jockeys Jye McNeil and Mark Zahra to crash, resulting in the death of the horse Ohope Wins, who required euthanasia. Both jockeys were treated at Alfred Hospital and released with minor injuries.
Following an inquiry, Racing Victoria stewards concluded that the event was a “tragic racing incident” rather than the result of careless riding. The investigation determined that a chain reaction began when Kings Valley shifted out and Green Spaces shifted in, causing Green Spaces to become unbalanced. This tightened the running of Half Yours, leading to its fall and the subsequent fatal injuries to Ohope Wins. While Half Yours is recovering from lacerations, its racing campaign is expected to end for the season.
