Serbia faces record diesel prices and shifting agricultural trends

Serbia is experiencing several economic shifts across energy, agriculture, and employment sectors. Diesel prices have reached a historic high, surpassing levels seen during the 2022 energy crisis. Experts attribute this to both geopolitical factors, such as instability in the Middle East, and domestic state influence via the Ministry of Trade and Energy.

In the agricultural sector, tomato producers are facing significant challenges due to extreme heat, which has shortened growing seasons and reduced yields. Meanwhile, market trends show a shift in consumer behavior; despite lower prices for certain peppers in regions like Zaječar, many households are opting for ready-made preserves over traditional home preparation due to changing lifestyles.

Food prices in Serbia are approaching European Union averages, reaching 96.6% of the EU average, even as average incomes remain below half of the EU average. This disparity is particularly notable in food and non-alcoholic beverages, which constitute about one-third of the average consumer basket.

On the employment front, the National Employment Service is organizing a job fair in Kula on September 9 to connect employers with job seekers in the West Bačka District to help reduce regional unemployment.
