Consumer and agricultural market trends in Serbia

Agricultural and consumer markets in Serbia and Republika Srpska continue to show fluctuating price trends. In Republika Srpska, July data indicated an annual inflation rate of 3.6%, with significant increases in public transport and water services, while milk and cheese prices decreased.

In Serbia, agricultural markets remain volatile. While prices for bananas, pineapples, and certain apples have dropped in Belgrade, raspberries, nectarines, and tomatoes have seen increases. Tomato producers specifically face challenges from extreme temperatures that shorten vegetation periods and lower yields. In Zaječar, despite lower prices for certain peppers, consumer behavior is shifting as households increasingly opt for ready-made preserves over traditional home preparation.

Economic disparities are becoming more evident as food prices in Serbia approach European Union averages, reaching 96.6% of the EU average. This occurs even as average incomes remain below half of the EU average, particularly regarding food and non-alcoholic beverages, which comprise approximately one-third of the average consumer basket.

Beyond agriculture, Serbia is facing a surge in energy costs. Diesel prices have reached historic highs, surpassing levels seen during the 2022 energy crisis. Experts link this to geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East and domestic regulatory decisions involving the Ministry of Trade and Energy. Additionally, health officials have reported 11 cases of West Nile fever in Serbia this season, with 10 patients suffering from neuroinvasive forms.
