Radio Gamma's 1977 Inauguration Spurred Calabria's Free Radio Era

On 17 July 1977 Radio Gamma began broadcasting on 98.5 MHz, becoming the first free‑radio station in the southern Cosentino area of Calabria. The launch, organized by the Perri brothers and other local activists, marked the transition from improvised community experiments to a more established local media presence.

The station was part of a broader surge of independent broadcasters that emerged in the mid‑1970s across Cosenza and the Savuto Valley, including Radio Rogliano International, Radio Libera Bisignano, Radio Sud and Radio Jobel. These outlets fostered cultural exchange, local journalism and community participation, leaving a lasting imprint on the region's cultural memory.
