Southern Italy free radio movement
Entities: Franco Picarone · Campania On Air · Lello Savonardo · Regional Council of Campania · Radio Bussola 24
Overview
The free‑radio movement in southern Italy began in the mid‑1970s with the launch of Radio Gamma on 17 July 1977 in Calabria. It sparked a wave of community stations—Radio Rogliano International, Radio Libera Bisignano, Radio Sud and Radio Jobel—providing local journalism and cultural exchange.
On 28 July 2026 the Campania Regional Council marked the 50th anniversary of the Constitutional Court’s 28 July 1976 decision that liberalised Italian airwaves. The ceremony, titled “Campania On Air – Giornata delle Radio Libere della Campania”, was held in the Sala Giancarlo Siani of Naples’s Centro Direzionale. Organized by the Fondazione AdAstra under the council’s patronage, it highlighted the 2022 regional law (n. 12) that created an annual “Free Radio Day”. Speakers included Council President Massimiliano Manfredi, councillor Franco Picarone, Napoli municipal council president Vincenza Amato, Corecom Campania head Carola Barbato and university representatives Lello Savonardo and Luigi Caramiello.
Awards were presented to local free‑radio stations; among them Radio Bussola 24 director Teodoro Maffia received the “Premio Le Voci della Campania”. The event also unveiled plans for a Festival of Free Radio, intended to become an annual gathering from 2027, and reiterated the role of community radio in delivering locally relevant, algorithm‑free information.
