Radek Sikorski proposes ‘European Legion’ for regional security
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski has proposed the creation of a ‘European Legion’, a specialized, standing force designed to enhance European security autonomy. Unlike the previously discussed ‘Army of Europe’, which implied the unification of national armies, the proposed Legion would be a voluntary force composed of seasoned professionals from across Europe.
Sikorski suggested that this force could eventually include battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans following the conclusion of the war. He emphasized that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security to avoid relying solely on Washington for every regional crisis, whether involving conventional threats or the weaponization of migration.
Sikorski clarified that the initiative is not intended to be a parallel alternative to NATO, but rather a ‘stronger European pillar within a stronger NATO’, asserting that European and transatlantic interests are complementary.
