Zondacrypto scandal triggers arrests and corruption allegations against Polish PM

The Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange scandal has escalated into a major political and criminal investigation in Poland. Law enforcement has detained several individuals, including investor Rafał Zaorski, who is accused of misappropriating at least 1.7 million PLN from the exchange's operator, BB Trade Estonia OÜ. Despite Zaorski's previous public displays of wealth, investigators have only been able to secure assets worth approximately 8,000 PLN. Additionally, a former police officer, Artur K., has been detained and faces charges of participating in an organized criminal group, money laundering, and sabotaging security procedures.

On the political front, the Law and Justice (PiS) party has filed a formal notification with the National Prosecutor's Office against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other government officials. The complaint alleges passive corruption, suggesting that Zondacrypto provided improper benefits, such as event sponsorship, to government representatives. PiS members highlighted a correlation between the dismissal of a previous investigation into the exchange in April 2024 and subsequent sponsorship of the European Economic Congress, which Tusk attended. The party claims the government failed to act on the matter for two years, providing the exchange with a period of impunity.
