Rafina, Greece grapples with port congestion as ministry seeks solutions

The second‑largest ferry port in Attica, Rafina, is experiencing severe congestion as an increase in scheduled routes has led to ships staying overnight and overloading the facility. Local residents and officials have raised concerns, prompting a parliamentary question by MP George Vlahos.

Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs Stephanos Gkikas said Minister Vasilis Kikilias is in continuous contact with the ship‑owners operating at Rafina to adjust arrival and departure schedules and avoid further overcrowding. The ministry highlighted that the “master plan” for the port has been submitted by the Port Authority, received a conditional opinion from the Ports Planning Committee, and awaits final approval by presidential decree, including an environmental assessment.

The government also cited the EU‑funded DECOMPRES project, which will finance electrification systems for vessels at berth in Rafina and three other Greek ports, reducing emissions and noise when ships are docked.
