Rafina port sees lower fares as minister vows safety review and post‑season consultation

Greek Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vasilis Kikílias said the surge in vessels calling at Rafina has intensified competition and cut passenger‑ferry ticket prices, with some return trips now offered for as little as €1. He highlighted that safety is overseen by the harbour master and the Coast Guard, noting that only four ships may berth simultaneously under current safety rules. After the summer tourist season, the ministry will hold a consultation with the municipality, regional authorities and local residents to discuss the port’s future. If the community asks for a reduction in ferry traffic, the ministry is prepared to act, while stressing that any restriction could affect the local economy.

Parliamentary representatives of the KKE and union groups have criticised the port’s “over‑crowded” conditions, citing unsafe night‑anchoring of ships, violations of crew work‑hour regulations and insufficient dock infrastructure. They have called for immediate measures, including increased staffing on vessels, better facilities and an end to practices that jeopardise passenger and worker safety.
