The invasive North‑American weed Ambrosia artemisiifolia, commonly known as ragweed, is expanding rapidly across Germany. Highly resistant to heat and capable of flourishing from July to October, a single mature plant can release up to one billion allergenic pollen grains into the air.
Health officials warn that the pollen causes intense reactions for roughly five percent of German allergy sufferers, with localized hotspots such as the Nürnberg area reporting up to twenty percent affected. Symptoms include asthma attacks, swollen eyes, persistent headaches, irritated nasal passages and skin rashes, especially when the plant is handled without protective gloves. Air‑pollution from vehicle exhaust appears to aggravate the pollen’s impact, extending the period of discomfort for residents.
Experts advise gardeners to identify and remove ragweed using gloves and proper protective gear to limit exposure and curb further spread.
