Overview
In late July 2026 German authorities reported a rapid expansion of the invasive North‑American ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) across the country, noting its high heat tolerance and prolific pollen production that threatens a growing share of allergy sufferers. Health officials highlighted severe symptoms such as asthma attacks and skin rashes, urging gardeners to remove the plant with protective gear.
A few days later Hungarian health officials announced the start of the ragweed pollen season, warning that detectable pollen would be present nationwide by the end of July. They recommended early medication, proactive mowing before flowering, and a real‑time pollen‑alert system.
On 30 July 2026 Hungary issued a third‑level (III) heat alert and a “red‑code” emergency as temperatures rose to 40 °C in several counties. Authorities advised increased fluid intake, avoidance of midday sun and special protection for the elderly, children, disabled and chronically ill. The extreme heat is expected to boost ragweed pollen activity, compounding the health risks already highlighted in Germany and Hungary.
