Nepal infrastructure faces widespread damage from floods and landslides
Heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides across Nepal have caused widespread damage to infrastructure, disrupting approximately 1,000 MW of electricity generation. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has mobilized technical teams and standby equipment to monitor the national power supply and repair damaged transmission lines and distribution systems.
Specific hydropower projects have been impacted. The 40 MW Rahughata Hydropower Project in Myagdi suffered damage to its structures and transmission towers. Meanwhile, the 144 MW Kali Gandaki ‘A’ Hydropower Project in Syangja is preparing to resume generation as river levels recede after a temporary suspension.
In addition to energy disruptions, the weather has severely impacted transportation. Multiple major highways, including the Pasang Lhyamu, Prithvi, and BP Highways, have faced closures or restrictions due to landslides and road cave-ins. In the Kathmandu Valley, the instability has also led to residential property damage, including a house collapse in Lalitpur caused by a landslide.
