Balaghat tribal child deaths spark criticism from Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has criticized the Madhya Pradesh government following the deaths of more than 30 tribal children in the Balaghat district. Gandhi alleged that the fatalities were caused by illness, malnutrition, and a lack of basic healthcare facilities, describing the state administration as incompetent and slow to respond.

In addition to the deaths in Balaghat, Gandhi raised concerns regarding the state's education system, access to clean drinking water, and issues involving adulterated medicines and illicit liquor. He specifically addressed Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, suggesting that the government should focus on ground realities rather than celebratory festivities.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has intervened by seeking a response from the state government and Balaghat administration regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) related to these deaths. The litigation includes allegations concerning hospital capacity and water quality. Meanwhile, local Congress leaders in Balaghat held a candlelight vigil to honor the deceased children and protested against government celebrations occurring during this period of mourning.
