Tribal child deaths and demographic crisis in Balaghat

Following the deaths of children within the Baiga tribal community in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, state officials initiated emergency health measures. Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla visited Machurda village to assure families of government assistance, prompting actions such as special vaccination campaigns, anti-malarial spraying in 38 villages, and the removal of the District Malaria Officer. Shukla also pledged investigations into potential official negligence.

As the crisis progressed, it drew significant political scrutiny. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the state administration for incompetence, citing illness, malnutrition, and inadequate healthcare as causes for the deaths of more than 30 tribal children. He further raised concerns regarding water quality and medicine adulteration. The Madhya Pradesh High Court intervened via a public interest litigation, requesting responses from the state and local administrations regarding hospital capacity and water quality.

Recent developments have highlighted a broader demographic crisis within the Baiga community. Former MLA Paras Saklecha noted a sharp decline in the Baiga population, stating the number of families dropped from 82,258 in 2019 to 72,788 in 2025. Saklecha questioned the effectiveness of tribal development budgets and alleged that approximately 500,000 tribal women were disqualified from the Ladli Behna Yojana because their nutritional grants were misclassified as personal income rather than community subsidies. Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar has demanded accountability for the deaths, noting that at least 32 children have died while many others remain ill from infections such as measles and malaria.
