Rahul Gandhi faces legal stay and political backlash
Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is facing significant political and legal scrutiny following several recent developments. The Supreme Court of India has granted a stay on proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Gandhi, which originated from comments he made regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court has issued a notice to respond within four weeks.
Simultaneously, Gandhi and Congress leaders faced criticism from the BJP after attempting to meet the Chief Justice of India to submit a memorandum regarding alleged election irregularities and to demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Critics argued that seeking a personal meeting while criminal cases are pending in the court is inappropriate. BJP MP Anurag Thakur further accused Gandhi of attempting to destabilize constitutional institutions through baseless allegations of “vote theft.”
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK party has also distanced itself from Gandhi, criticizing his recent remarks on Tamil culture and history. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Anandan Dorai stated that the party does not require lectures on protecting their cultural identity, describing the BJP and Congress as “two sides of the same coin.”
