KAIST robot completes full marathon on a single battery charge

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed Raibo2, a quadruped robot capable of completing a full marathon on a single battery charge. The robot finished the Sangju Marathon in South Korea in 4 hours, 19 minutes, and 52 seconds.

According to research published in the journal Nature, the robot achieved this by addressing energy loss through a combination of hardware and software optimizations. These include lightweight leg mechanisms, optimized motor-drive circuits to reduce electrical loss, and movement patterns trained via machine learning to improve efficiency.

Unlike wheeled robots, legged machines consume significant energy just to support their own weight. Raibo2 demonstrated a transport cost of 0.25, which is more efficient than the human benchmark of 0.37. Researchers estimate the robot could have traveled an additional 25 kilometers after crossing the finish line. This advancement could expand the practical use of quadruped robots in delivery, patrolling, and search-and-rescue operations in difficult terrain.
