KAIST Raibo2 robot marathon achievement

Overview

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), led by Professor Jemin Hwangbo, developed a quadruped robot named Raibo2 that successfully completed a full marathon on a single battery charge. The robot finished the Sangju Dried Persimmon Marathon in South Korea in 4 hours, 19 minutes, and 52 seconds.

According to research published in the journal Nature, the robot achieved high energy efficiency through hardware and software optimizations, including lightweight leg mechanisms, optimized motor-drive circuits, and machine learning-trained movement patterns. Raibo2 demonstrated a transport cost of 0.25, which is more efficient than the human benchmark of 0.37. During the event, researchers utilized sensors to monitor technical data such as voltage, current, temperature, and battery state of charge, synchronized with GPS data.
