Rail Baltica project deadline extended to 2034
The Baltic states have officially agreed to extend the deadline for the first phase of the Rail Baltica railway project to 2034. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs announced that the previous 2030 target is no longer realistic due to insufficient construction capacity, including shortages in materials, machinery, and labor.
To ensure the project's viability, the Baltic nations have prepared a formal notification for the European Commission. They intend to advocate for 10 billion euros in European Union funding for the three countries during the next financing cycle, which is expected to be available in 2029. The leaders noted that national budgets are currently prioritized toward strengthening European external borders, making EU financial support essential for the railway's completion.
