Rail Baltica project faces delays and technical data inconsistencies

The Rail Baltica infrastructure project is facing delays and data inconsistencies across the Baltic region. In Lithuania, Transport Minister Juras Taminskas confirmed a four-year delay for the project, though he noted that such delays are not uncommon for large-scale European Union megaprojects. Lithuania aims to install tracks from Kaunas to Warsaw by 2028 and complete the section from Kaunas to Panevėžys by 2030. Work has also begun on signaling systems for the section built in 2015.

In Latvia, the project faces challenges related to construction management, specifically regarding the decision to use a single contractor for an entire section and prioritizing station construction over tracks. Furthermore, reports indicate that technical data regarding the project's progress is often confused, as older technical parameters are frequently mixed with updated 2024 data. This makes it difficult to reconcile current construction statistics with the original project configurations, such as the planned 249 km/h passenger train speeds and the 2030 completion target for the first phase.
