Rail Baltica project faces funding and implementation challenges

The Rail Baltica railway project is navigating significant financial and logistical hurdles across the Baltic region. Lithuanian Transport Minister Juras Taminskas reported that while the European Parliament supports the project and discussions are underway to secure funding from the 2028–2034 EU budget, the initiative is experiencing delays and rising costs.

Taminskas noted that Lithuania aims to meet its obligations by 2030. While acknowledging potential contractor errors in certain sections, he emphasized that legal measures are being taken to rectify defects. In contrast, Latvia is facing greater uncertainty. Latvian Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis stated that the new government must re-evaluate the project's feasibility within the upcoming national budget due to geopolitical shifts and unpredictable EU funding levels.

While Estonia remains on schedule alongside Lithuania, Latvia's progress is currently stalled, with officials looking toward potential government changes to revitalize the project.
