Rail Baltica project undergoes optimization review in Latvia

The Rail Baltica implementation committee has reviewed the results of an in-depth project evaluation conducted by international consultant Alvarez & Marsal. The assessment aimed to provide an objective analysis of project risks, financial status, and commitments to develop a sustainable implementation plan.

Latvian officials are focusing on optimizing the project to reduce costs. Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis stated that the first phase in Latvia will maintain the current scope to ensure a cross-border connection from Lithuania to the Estonian border, including works at Riga Airport and the southern part of the Riga Central Station. However, the government is exploring ways to minimize technical and material requirements.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs emphasized the need for a “minimum program” or base scenario. He noted that current plans for Latvia include 17 stations over a 200-kilometer stretch, contrasting this with high-speed rail segments in other regions. The Ministry of Transport is tasked with developing proposals by September 15 to reduce technical requirements, such as station platform lengths, to the minimum necessary for functionality.
