Railway infrastructure modernization projects underway in Žilina and Czech Republic

Major railway infrastructure updates are underway in Central Europe. In the Žilina railway node, a transition from a 3 kV direct current system to a more efficient 25 kV, 50 Hz alternating current system is scheduled between September 14 and September 28. This modernization aims to reduce energy loss and minimize stray currents that can damage nearby metal structures. The change will extend to connecting lines toward Čadca and Vrútky, though passengers should expect significant service disruptions, including cancellations and longer travel times during the two-week transition.

In the Czech Republic, Správa železnic is planning the electrification of the approximately 40-kilometer track between Havlíčkův Brod and Hlinsko. The project, valued at up to 1.179 billion CZK, is expected to begin in 2028 with completion targeted for mid-2029. Once finished, the electrification will allow for electric passenger and freight trains, reducing emissions and operating costs while shortening travel times by approximately seven minutes.
