Central European transport infrastructure modernization

Overview

Central European nations are implementing various transport infrastructure modernization projects. In Slovakia, the Žilina railway node is undergoing a transition from a 3 kV direct current system to a 25 kV, 50 Hz alternating current system to reduce energy loss and protect metal structures. This transition, scheduled for mid-September 2026, will affect lines toward Čadca and Vrútky, causing service disruptions.

In the Czech Republic, railway and urban transit projects are advancing. Správa železnic plans to electrify the 40-kilometer track between Havlíčkův Brod and Hlinsko starting in 2028 to reduce emissions and travel times. Simultaneously, cities are developing new transit hubs: Jihlava has begun serving the first part of its new Central Transport Terminal, while Jablonec nad Nisou has commenced construction on a 471 million CZK terminal designed to integrate road and rail transport.
