Rakibul Hussain urges ECI to probe former Nagaon official

Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain has called on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct an independent and time-bound inquiry into the conduct of former Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma. The request follows reports suggesting Sharma may be a candidate in the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election.

Hussain expressed concerns regarding the “purity, neutrality and credibility” of the electoral process, noting that Sharma previously served as the District Election Officer. In that capacity, Sharma oversaw sensitive responsibilities including EVM management, polling arrangements, and the deployment of personnel.

Although Sharma has since taken voluntary retirement from government service, Hussain argued that his resignation should not exempt him from scrutiny regarding his actions while in office. Hussain has also requested the appointment of an independent senior Election Officer or Observer to supervise the upcoming election arrangements in Nagaon.
