Rakuten Viber introduces ChatGPT-powered news and message summaries

Rakuten Viber has introduced two new AI-powered features through its collaboration with OpenAI: ‘Your News’ and ‘Unread Summary’. These tools utilize ChatGPT technology to enhance user efficiency and experience within the messaging platform.

‘Your News’ provides users with personalized daily news summaries based on selected topics. The ‘Unread Summary’ feature aims to reduce manual scrolling by providing concise summaries of missed conversations. This is particularly targeted at the approximately one-third of Viber users who receive 20 or more unread messages daily.

To ensure privacy, the company stated that when ChatGPT summarizes unread conversations, it only accesses the necessary unread messages and participant names required to generate the summary, protecting the rest of the conversation data. The integration allows users to access OpenAI capabilities, such as chat-based assistance, image regeneration, and link summarization, directly within the Viber app.
