Raúl Alejandro Girón Jiménez's habeas corpus rejected in Caso Coral

A judge in the Dominican Republic has rejected a habeas corpus petition filed by Army Major Raúl Alejandro Girón Jiménez. Girón Jiménez, who was sentenced to five years in prison as part of the ‘Caso Coral’ corruption investigation, sought to lift his current house arrest.

Judge Franny González of the Fourth Criminal Chamber of the National District ruled that the defendant has alternative legal avenues to request the removal of coercive measures. The decision followed a request from prosecutor Jonathan Pérez Furcal of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca).

Girón Jiménez had previously reached an agreement with the Public Ministry, providing testimony regarding the operations of other military and police personnel involved in the embezzlement of over RD$4,500 million from the state.

Separately, the First Collegiate Court of the National District is scheduled to hear a request to cease coercive measures presented by the defense. Additionally, the full reading of the sentence for other defendants in the case, including Adán Cáceres Silvestre and Juan Carlos Torres Robiou, is set for September 23.
