Dominican Republic Caso Coral corruption investigation

In the Dominican Republic, legal proceedings continue regarding the ‘Caso Coral’ corruption investigation, which involves the embezzlement of over RD$4,500 million from the state.

Initially, a judge rejected a habeas corpus petition filed by Army Major Raúl Alejandro Girón Jiménez, who sought to lift his house arrest. Girón Jiménez had previously reached an agreement with the Public Ministry to provide testimony concerning the operations of military and police personnel involved in the scandal.

Subsequently, the First Collegiate Court of the National District ordered the end of Girón Jiménez’s house arrest. Because the full reading of the ruling has not yet occurred, the sentence is not considered final. His house arrest was replaced by a requirement to report to the court monthly and a prohibition on leaving the country without judicial authorization. Girón Jiménez has provided testimony since 2021 regarding military corruption and the mismanagement of state funds.

The court has scheduled the full reading of the sentence for several individuals, including Major General Adán Benoni Cáceres Silvestre, for September 23, citing the complexity of the case and the extensive nature of the oral trial.
