Rami Library named world’s best green library
Rami Library in Istanbul has been named the world’s best green library in the ‘Large-Scale Project’ category at the 2026 IFLA Green Library Awards. The project involved transforming the historic 19th-century Rami Barracks into a climate-resilient urban public space. The award was presented during the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress held in Busan, South Korea.
Selected from 62 applications across 27 countries, the project was recognized for its holistic approach, integrating environmental, social, cultural, and educational dimensions. Key sustainable features include rainwater reuse, solar energy applications, LED lighting, and low-consumption equipment. IFLA Secretary General Sharon Memis noted that the project serves as an international model by combining cultural heritage preservation with community engagement.
Separately, the Rami Library hosted the 1st Rami Children and Art Biennial, which drew 650,000 visitors over 98 days. The event featured 3D art installations inspired by approximately 100 illustrated children's books, aiming to establish the library as a vibrant cultural and living community center.
