Rami Library sustainability recognition

The Rami Library in Istanbul has been recognized as the world’s best green library in the ‘Large-Scale Project’ category at the 2026 IFLA Green Library Awards. The award was presented during the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Busan, South Korea.

The project involved the adaptive reuse of the historic 19th-century Rami Barracks, transforming the site into a climate-resilient urban public space. The facility includes 36,000 square meters of indoor space and 51,000 square meters of landscaped green areas, featuring an ecological pond and hundreds of trees to support urban biodiversity.

Sustainability measures integrated into the complex include solar energy, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting for irrigation and sanitation, and low-consumption equipment. IFLA Secretary General Sharon Memis noted that the project serves as an international model by combining cultural heritage preservation with community engagement. Additionally, the library has functioned as a cultural center, recently hosting the 1st Rami Children and Art Biennial.
